A growler is a piece of equipment used for testing armatures. It consists of a U-shaped iron core with a coil wound around the arms. When placed on the armature or stator core of a motor, the growler acts as the primary of a transformer, and the armature coils act as the secondary. The growler is switched on, and a thin piece of ferrous metal (usually an old hacksaw blade) is run along the core of the armature. If a short exists, the hacksaw blade will vibrate against the core of the armature above the shorted windings. The test involves applying AC voltage to the stator core of the motor and listening for any abnormal sounds or vibrations in the armature. - SOLD AS IS - LIST OF ITEMS MISSING MAY NOT BE ALL INCLUSIVE.
